Earlier on in the year, I discussed the exciting transition from 4K to 8K format, encouraging us to Embrace the Challenge. By taking it step by step, we can explore the changes related to 8 K each month, leading to a noticeable improvement in our skills without feeling overwhelmed.
The above video provides good visuals for comparing the two different formats. It was filmed using a Canon R5. As you can imagine, using a professional filming set would make this even more obvious.
The first thing to note is that 8K isn’t twice the difference; it’s four times the difference and 16 times more so than 1080p.
It is a quick video, but the one obvious thing is the background. This will be a big deal because the viewer will be able to see the background a lot more clearly. The old attitude used to be that it’s just filler in the background, which could mean a set, lighting, an extra actor and so on, but it won’t be filler anymore it will be clear.
Given that we know detail would be clearer and background would be clearer and more visible, how will that affect how we consider background for TV, streaming, and film production?
The key to navigating this transition is a heightened attention to detail. How can we maintain this focus without adding excessive time and effort? This is the challenge we must embrace.
Application
Keep a journal of ideas you find work and save those in a fashion you can apply and use. Keep backups on a USB; duplication will save time in the long run if you lose your journal.
Also keep in mind that cameras are in phones too, this means that fans will take footage at live shows, theatre and on location, might be handy to keep that in the back of your mind, just in case.
