Three Types of Winter Olympic Sports

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of sports, it will be a start or some ideas to brainstorm which sports you or your community are interested in.

Traditional

From Alpine Skiing to Curling to Figure Skating, having an idea of which traditional sports would suit your coverage is a good start. There is an abundance of ideas you can follow through on, from what it takes to get there to the psychology of sports, yes, they use psychologists to prepare for specific events, and even where figure skaters get their costumes.
Figure skaters have a lot to prepare for, some do get financial assistance. That committee supports Team USA, but they must also pay for their coach and expenses. Expenses mean exactly that it’s expensive.
A popular figure skating costume designer is based in Canada and affiliated with the Ice Academy of Montreal (IAM). It helps to know which you would like to cover in depth in 2026, to save your time and energy and make it more engaging.
Once you know what traditional sport catches your eye, you could then go deeper by focusing on a favourite or newcomer. Where do they get their equipment, suits or even costumes from? Who is the coach? What do they love about the sport? What inspires them? What did it take to get there? Have your mental list ready.

Contemporary Sports

IOC is good at keeping sports relevant to a contemporary audience. Some of these sports, such as snowboarding, skeleton, and ski mountaineering, are contemporary sports. Do your research and add what interests you to your three. These are the three sports you will specialise in for 2026, so make sure you like them.

What’s New?

Ski Mountaineering is making its debut in 2026. Other new sports have been added in the 21st Century, again, pick one you like.
Know the background story to the sport and anything else you might find interesting.

Putting Your Editorial Together

Once you have your big three put together for your big dive, start working on that editorial.

You could do a casual interview with those sports fans, behind-the-scenes action, such as who makes the sports gear. You could even use a survey tool to take the guesswork out of what your community would like to know. Five questions would be a good crossover. Survey tools like SurveyMonkey are good online tools, there are some free ones available.
