Finding Inspiration in Film

To make the most of our time and get some inspiration, the following modern films take us back to the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. I personally call it not reinventing the wheel when you don’t have to.

If you have some favourites, by all means reference them. The only thing I will add is that dark lipstick and red lipstick have been done ad nauseam. The 21st Century take is always welcome.

The Great Gatsby (2013) by Baz Luhrmann is an extravaganza for fashion and captures the energy of the Roaring 20s.

The 2002 film Chicago takes us more into the Jazz Era. Hairstyles look good with the bob, and the side part is introduced during that time period. A good fashion reference for the 1920s.

Captain America is set in the 1940s. Skirt lengths are up, which is worth noting, as is the changing fashion silhouette.

Devil in a Blue Dress is set in 1948. Whatever film grabs your attention is worth watching for its storytelling, film, and fashion perspectives.
